Let’s talk a bit about colors

This is quite a technical post, I hope it will be useful to you!

1. let’s draw a pyramid and paint swatches with gouache. I’m using cobalt blue, ivory black and Chinese white

2. a bit of vocabulary. It’s very interesting to make these swatches with similar colors, I mean try this with a cobalt blue, an ultramarine blue, a primary blue… and your tints, tones and shades will be all different

3. let’s talk about saturation, the horizontal line shows swatches with the same saturation, meaning the same amount of pure color inside, adding white, grey or black

4. values: in my opinion this is what matters the most! let’s go black and white and find out that the vertical lines have all the same saturation, meaning the same light

5. an example of a low saturation painting, everything relying on color

6. if you go B&W the image is very difficult to read, there is almost no contrast (given by the different values)

7. High saturation, colors are almost pure (meaning without black or white)

8. the values are on two levels, one dark, one mid-tone, giving a medium contrast
